French news outlets on the FrIdéo ideology scale

FrIdéo places thirty French national news outlets on one continuous left-right scale, built by fusing nine independent families of evidence. Each outlet below has its own page: the score, the interval around it, what every family of evidence said, and what should stop you over-reading it.

Zero is the mean of these thirty outlets, not a neutral point in French politics, and fifteen of the thirty have intervals that include it. Read the bands as evidence-weighted indications, not as verdicts.

Which French news outlet is furthest right, and furthest left?

Across this 30-outlet panel, L'Humanité has the most negative score and Valeurs actuelles the most positive. They are the two anchors of the scale. These are positions relative to this panel, not absolute ideological coordinates.

How do you measure a news outlet’s political orientation?

FrIdéo does not ask one source. It fuses nine independent families of evidence (ownership, hyperlink network position, survey-perceived orientation, editorial charters, two rating panels and a lexical score computed from the text, among others), each standardised across the same panel, then combines them into a continuous position with a confidence interval.

Does a score of zero mean an outlet is neutral?

No. Zero on this scale is the mean of the 30 outlets in the panel, not a neutral point in French politics. An outlet at zero is average for this panel, which is a different claim. Separately, 15 of the 30 outlets have intervals that contain zero and so cannot be distinguished from the centre.

Can these scores be reused?

Yes. The full scores, with intervals, evidence families and a data dictionary, are published as CSV and JSON under CC BY 4.0 and deposited on data.gouv.fr and Kaggle. The method is described in a paper presented at ICNLSP 2026.
